The Pulse Megamouth was undoubtedly one of our favourite products so we were encouraged to hear Pulse had introduced a new Mk II version, shortly before the original line was to be discontinued.
At first glance the new Megamouth looks almost identical to it’s predecessor and you’d be hard pushed to differentiate the two by looking at them from the front. Indeed, they share the same distinctive black moulded ABS shell complete with carry handle. As with the original Megamouth and the Carlsbro speakezee before it, the unit weighs 6kg, meaning it light enough to carry around by hand, between venues. The latest model ships complete with handheld mic, tie clip mic and headset as did the outgoing version, but also a remote control. The addition of the remote control aside, perhaps the biggest change to this latest incarnation of the Megamouth is the swap-out of the dated cassette player for an MP3 player, complete with SD / USB reader functionality.
Advertising 30W output on the box, the Megamouth Mk II actually has the same power as the previous Megamouth, although it was advertised as 20W. The reason being that Pulse have decided to now advertise Wmax as opposed to RMS as they previously did. That said, 20W from a unit this size is still plenty of power and we don’t hesitate in recommending a product of this power for small gatherings, meetings etc up to around 50 people.
The inclusion of a remote control on any portable PA system is great and the Megamouth is no exception. The operator can now stand at some distance from the megamouth and have complete control over the volume and also of the MP3 functionality.
The microphones are of good quality for a product in this price bracket. As with most tie-clip mics, you’ll often need to position it or talk with your face angled toward it, for consistent results. That said, you’ll find the same on pretty much any tie-clip mic and the problem isn’t specific to the Megamouth. For best results, use the handheld or headset microphones. Both work off 9v batteries.
The battery life on the Megamouth is around 4 hours on a full charge, when being used for voice amplification. If you start playing music through the MP3 player or from another source via one of its inputs, expect this to reduce down to a couple of hours, maybe even less depending what you are playing. As well as being battery operated the unit can also operate via the mains and 12v DC such as a car battery (lead for doing so, sold separately as an accessory).
We’ve not sold enough of these unit to know for sure how they will fair in terms of faults but the build quality seems as good as the old Megamouth and if that’s anything to go by, I’d imagine we won’t be seeing too many of these returned to us for repair. Of course, they come with a years manufacturers warranty anyhow but it’s still frustrating when something breaks!
One question we often get asked with PA systems and portable PA systems in particular:
The answer is ‘yes’.. for this particular unit, we recommend using a stereo jack to 2 x phono cable
So, in conclusion: Just like the model it replaces, the new Pulse Megamouth gives you a lot of bang for your buck. It's hard to beat this for a compact, relatively lightweight and now feature rich portable PA system.
