When browsing online looking to purchase a DJ controller, it was essential that my chosen controller would allow me to construct a four deck mix when practising. As the proud owner of four Pioneer CDJ 800s, planning a DJ set can be somewhat time consuming, as the only way to practise is to burn countless CD’s (this particularly applies if you are mixing on more then 2 decks). I was looking for a way of piecing together my DJ sets without having to burn CD’s, and rely on all my equipment to be set up at the same time.
As a regular club DJ, keeping up with technology and adapting to new equipment is forever an ongoing battle, and investing in new DJ gear on a tight budget can be tricky to say the least. I stumbled across the Numark Mix Track Quad and was amazed by how cheap it was, especially when comparing it to other 4 deck DJ controllers on the market. After reading some positive reviews and watching a few tech tutorials on how the controller worked, I was convinced, and purchased a Mix Track Quad that very day.
When unboxing the controller I was quickly surprised by how slim and tidy it looked. The rubber pads were much better quality then I thought they would be, and the jog wheels seemed to have a pleasantly smooth motion to them (which wasn’t something that I was anticipating when purchasing the product). The four channel faders had a sturdy glide when moving them up and down, and the EQ knobs for ‘Bass’ ‘Mid’ and ‘Treble’ were stiff and responsive. The only other items that remained in the box were the virtual SE DJ installation CD, and the USB cable that allowed me to connect the unit straight to my laptop.
Installing the software was incredibly simple and took approximately 5 minutes. The CD comes in a paper CD wallet with a serial number sticker on the front. Do not lose the CD or the serial number, otherwise you won’t be able to install the software on other computers. You have an unlimited amount of software installations for PC or Mac. Once the software was installed it was simply a case of plug and play!
My favourite aspect about this product is that the software and the hardware are all colour coded. This means you never get confused about what tune is playing on each channel. The two jog wheels are backlit, and change colour in correlation to the channels inside the software. This lets you know instantly what channel / tune is being played on each jog wheel, without having to keep glancing back to your computer screen.
For the price, it’s a bargain! It’s an entry-level piece of equipment, but for DJ’ing in pubs and bars, or practising before transferring your set onto turntables or CDJ’s, it’s great. I’ve now started using the Mixtrack Quad for smaller gigs in pubs and bars, and deem it to be a reliable piece of equipment. I’d recommend it to any beginner looking to learn the basics of DJ’ing, or to any DJ looking for a simple solution which makes for a more convenient DJ’ing experience.
